I teach California Culture at San Francisco State University. My books include "A Bomb in Every Issue: How the Short, Unruly Life of Ramparts Magazine Changed America" and "American Prophet: The Life and Work of Carey McWilliams." I also acquire and develop books for the University of California Press. Before that, I was the founding editorial director at PoliPointPress, an editor at the Public Policy Institute of California, and an associate professor of English at the University of North Texas. I chaired the California Studies Association from 2008 to 2011. I'm currently writing a cultural history of the Grateful Dead for St. Martin's Press.
